Breakfast has changed a lot since I was a kid. I grew up on cereal and pop tarts. For me, breakfast was the fun meal of the day, filled with prizes in cereal boxes and sweet treats. Today still, the breakfast aisle at the grocery store is filled with sugary cereals that offer little nutritional value.
It's hard to find quick and easy breakfast ideas that are nutritious and not highly processed. That's why I started eating this healthy, protein- and nutrient-packed breakfast daily. It's quick to put together and tastes decadent.
This breakfast is a tasty mixture of protein, fruits, and healthy fats found in cacao nibs, which keeps you full for longer and is much healthier than the processed junk food we grew up on.
It's so simple and takes minutes to assemble. First, empty a container of plain Greek yogurt into a bowl. The Greek yogurt provides protein that helps build lean muscle, which may promote weight loss, and it keeps you full for longer. If you cannot tolerate dairy, like me, I have found this great alternative by Ripple that is dairy-free and still full of protein and probiotics.
Next, top the yogurt with sliced fresh fruit. Berries and cherries (I use frozen cherries) are a great option, as they are full of anti-oxidants, which fight inflammation and protect cells from disease. They may even help to prevent cancer and other diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Finally, the star of the show is cacao nibs. These crunchy, chocolatey nuggets of goodness are basically raw chocolate, and they add texture to the meal, along with health benefits. Cacao is full of antioxidants as well as magnesium, a nutrient that is important for muscle and nerve function.
